Disturbing Discoveries
I do not spend as much time as perhaps I should following news and current events, but did manage to find time this morning to read some articles posted on the Internet. Particularly disturbing was a news item on Usenet warning of impending disaster facing the Earth and all inhabitants-Our Sun is dying! As explained in the article, the Sun is powered by a process known as fusion, where atoms of Hydrogen fuse under great temperatures and pressures into atoms of Helium. Great energy is released as this happens and that is what is responsible for the light and heat our planet receives. This light and heat allows plants to grow through photosynthesis, and drives the water cycle that is responsible for rain. Without the sun, life on Earth would end in a matter of months. But as the article explained, another more immediate problem exists-as the Sun runs out of Hydrogen, the Helium atoms begin fusing into a series of increasingly heaver elements, and as this happens the Sun expands into what is called a red giant, and all of the inner planets, including the Earth, will be vaporized. Long before this life on Earth will perish as temperatures climb higher and higher. The ice caps will melt, coastal areas will be flooded, the oceans will boil, and the atmosphere will escape into space. No scientists have even a theory or proposal for a solution to this problem. There seems to be no way out of this one!
So in light of this certain doom, problems like the button missing on the shirt I just paid to have laundered, the leak on the roof I have not had time to fix, the question of weather or not Elvis is alive, and even the price of gas are put in a different perspective. Considering the lack of media coverage on this problem I suspect a massive government cover-up to keep our population from anarchy and chaos. Fortunately some researcher had the courage to post this on the Internet so we can all plan the remainder of our lives. God bless and have a nice day.
